Hydrotherapy group classes in Bedfordview

Small, supervised water-based rehabilitation classes in Bedfordview, Johannesburg, run by Gabriella Moreira — an HPCSA-registered biokineticist. The buoyancy, warmth and resistance of water let you move and strengthen with a fraction of the load you would carry on land. It is rehabilitation, not swimming lessons.

Who it suits

Who hydrotherapy is for

Water reduces the load on your joints, which makes it a useful environment when land-based exercise is painful or difficult. Gabi will talk through your history before recommending a class.

Arthritis and joint pain

Osteoarthritis of the knee, hip or spine, where building supporting muscle on land is painful.

Post-surgery rehab

Joint replacements, spinal procedures and lower limb surgery, where early movement matters but load does not.

Chronic pain

Conditions such as fibromyalgia and persistent lower back pain, where land exercise can provoke a flare-up.

Balance and fall prevention

Balance retraining and lower-limb strengthening without the fear of a fall.

Low-impact conditioning

Cardiovascular work for people who cannot tolerate impact on their joints.

How a class works

Classes are kept small so Gabi can watch each participant and adjust exercises individually. The group follows a shared progressive programme — exercises become more challenging as the group improves.

  • A warm-up phase with gentle range-of-motion work
  • Targeted strengthening using water resistance and equipment (pool noodles, floats, resistance bands)
  • Balance and proprioception exercises where relevant
  • Cardiovascular conditioning at an appropriate intensity
  • A cool-down and stretch to close the session

Medical aid
